Just beat Quake 4 (default difficulty). It was a rather fun game. Storywise you are a space marine in an offensive on a hostile alien planet. The game starts out with the fleet just starting the invasion (your dropship is in one of the first waves). The progression is very objective orientated with stuff like find a way to open those hangar doors or escort this demo expert so he can set his charges. The team ai is okay as well (my only grip is they just stand there firing when a melee dude gets in their face instead of backpeddling). I especially like it when I have a medic and tech dude with me. When you clear the area of hostiles, they can heal you and repair your armor.

The enemies vary from pathetically easy to when did I last save. Of course the pathetically easy can still hurt later in the game when they are carrying some of the heavier weapons (like rail guns or nail guns). As for encounters, you can generally tell when you are going to fight an enemy, and where they are going to be coming from (none of that lets suprise you with a zombie from a hidden compartment that doom 3 had).

As for the weapons, I liked them alot. You default blaster has infinite ammo and a flashlight. The machine gun does good damage (I was still using it near the end) and also has a flashlight. The shotgun is well a pump shotgun (good up close damage, slow reload until you get the upgrade). The hyper blaster is like the machine gun except it does more damage, richochets (once upgraded), and does not have a flashlight. The nail gun is a wonderful weapon, especially after the upgrades (lock onto an enemy with the sight and the nails home). It was balanced in storymode my rarity of ammo. The grenade launcher is all the fun it was in Quake 1. Bounce it around corners to suprise enemies; hit them directly for good damage; or do an oops and blow yourself up with it). The rocket launcher was also rather good. Once upgraded, you can rapidly fire 3 rockets at a time; and if you hold down the secondary fire, the rockets followed your crosshair. The rail gun was just as nasty as it was in quake 2. If the enemy is in your crosshair, you will hit. Downside, easy to miss moving targets and only 3 shots per clip. There is the lightning gun, just like in Quake 1 except it is better. Once upgraded, it can hit multiple enemies (chain lighting style) and it actually has a long range for the first target (unlike quake 1 where the range was much shorter). Like the nail gun, the balanced it with scarcity of ammo (which it chews through fast). Last but not least, there is the Dark Matter Gun. 1 shot per clip with a long reload. Fires a slow moving sphere that damages enemies that it passes by then blows up when it hits a solid surface. Great to clear corridors with (and damage slow moving bosses).

Overall, a very good game single player wise for a fps. Not sure where I will try out the multiplayer.
